Ethel Barrymore Theatre

Ethel Barrymore Theatre is a 1,058 capacity Broadway theatre, named in honor of esteemed stage actress (and Drew Barrymore’s great, great aunt) Ethel Barrymore.

The theatre opened in 1928, with Barrymore starring in The Kingdom of God; a play selected for the opening by leading lady herself. Since then, the theatre has continued to uphold its reputation for quality productions that prove incredibly popular with audiences, with 2012’s production of Death of a Salesman breaking box office records, grossing over $1,000,000 in one week!

Set in the heart of Manhattan’s iconic Theater District, the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is a Broadway landmark. Named after the legendary actress Ethel Barrymore, the venue combines modern amenities with an intimate connection to the Golden Age of American theater.

Opened in 1928, it’s the only surviving theater built by the Shubert Organization to honour a performer. It’s also one of the only Broadway theaters that’s never been renamed or sold. This unique blend of history, culture, and Broadway lore makes Ethel Barrymore a true New York City icon.

Architecturally, the Ethel Barrymore is a masterpiece. Celebrated American theater architect Herbert J. Krapp designed the venue, drawing inspiration from the grandeur of Roman public baths. The façade is magnificent and features soaring arches, rusticated terracotta blocks and a two-story grillwork screen. For the interior, Herbert J. Krapp combined Elizabethan, Mediterranean, and Adamsesque styles to create a truly stunning space.

With a seating capacity of 1,058, Ethel Barrymore Theatre offers an intimate viewing experience. Its smaller size enhances the connection between performers and the audience, allowing every seat to feel close to the action. Acoustics and sightlines have been carefully considered to prioritise audience immersion, making the Ethel Barrymore a sought-after venue for plays and Tony Award-winning productions.
