“With its star-studded cast, top-tier creative team, and a powerful narrative, this revival of Othello is set to be one of Broadway’s most anticipated productions of 2025.” – Broadway.com
In a perfect world, the groundbreaking role of Othello is played by Academy and Golden Globe winning actor Denzel Washington. Oh wait, it’s already happening! This February, an astounding Broadway play takes over the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. This show goes back to basics with superb stage acting, brilliant directing, and an award-worthy creativity. The best of the best came together to deliver this brilliant epic. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the mischievous ensign, lago. A betrayal so great that it has been played in theaters for centuries. Yes, this classic tragedy by Shakespear is given a fantastic twist in the year 2025 by Tony Award winning director Kenny Leon. What more can we say? But if you are aching to know more on what could be the most sensational and compelling Broadway play of the year, then read on and find out!
Othello is a time honoured tragedy written by a legendary playwright. The epic tells the story of Othello, a military commander in the Venetian Army who is manipualted by his ensign, lago. The junior ranking officer swayed his commander into thinking that he is being cheated on by his wife Desdemona. Lago secretly hates Othello for promoting another soldier, Cassio, who happens to be an aristocrat, above him. Meanwhile, lago’s friend Roderigo also despises Othello for getting married to Desdemona, a woman whom he wishes to marry but he was denied by her father. lago swears to wreak havoc in Othello and Desdemona’s marriage.
Othello, the play, has been revived countless times and many renditions have always been made. Be it a school play or professional theater, this is a story that has been retold again and again. It’s one of Shakespear’s most popular plays and most of all, it tackles issues on racism. For starters, Othello is a moor commanding warrior-general. Lago despised him for that. Hence, the character’s quest for vengeance would end up in lies, betrayal, and eventually death.
Director Kenny Leon brings this amazing story to life with performances from Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, England’s most sensational up and coming actresses Molly Osborne (Desdemona), Tony Award winning actor Andrew Burnap (Cassio), and Anthony Michael Lopez as Roderigo. Another Hollywood and stage actor Daniel Pearce plays the role of Desdemona’s father Brabantio.
Besides an amazing cast, the Broadway revival of Othello has secured some of the most talented brains in the circuit. The creative team comprises Tony Award-winning lighting designer Derek McLane, Tony Award-winning costume designer Dede Ayite, Tony Award winning lighting designer and Theater Hall of Fame inductee Natasha Katz, Obie Award winning sound designer Justin Ellington, and Academy Award-winning hair and wig designer Mia Neal. Opening on February 24, 2025, the play will strictly go on for 15 weeks only. The last time viewers saw Othello on Broadway was in 1982, a showcase which starred James Earl Jones as Othello, Christopher Plummer as Lago, and Dianne Wiest as Desdemona.
“Othello is undoubtedly a brilliant piece of literature and theatre; it’s a riveting story about the worst parts of human nature that culminates in a satisfyingly tragic conclusion,” wrote Peace, Amore, and Bibli.
This 2025, the show has been treated with great promotion with all the publications and critics intrigued. The show also announced with a compelling poster featuring lead actors Washington and Gyllenhaal. It is also the first time Washington and Leon will be working together since 2014. The play brings forth two hours and 35 minutes (with intermission) of deceit, betrayal, revenge, jealousy, and intrigue. A formula that brings in the most unabashed and relentless of reviewers. The story itself has earned praises from some of the most distinguished writers to casual viewers. “Othello is undoubtedly a brilliant piece of literature and theatre; it’s a riveting story about the worst parts of human nature that culminates in a satisfyingly tragic conclusion,” wrote Peace, Amore, and Bibli about the original play.
Broadway.com expressed its excitement in the upcoming tragedy piece. “Shakespeare’s Othello is a play overflowing with passion, rage and intrigue. In the upcoming Broadway revival, it will also have two of the most magnetic leading men around pitted against one another.” The article also predicted, “Denzel commands the stage,” “Jake Gyllenhaal’s Iago: a blue-eyed monster,” and the writer went on to call Kenny Leon “a master of classics.” The article ended with the statement, “With its star-studded cast, top-tier creative team, and a powerful narrative, this revival of Othello is set to be one of Broadway’s most anticipated productions of 2025.” Meanwhile, the New York Theater Guide predicted that the 2025 Broadway Revival of Othello will be in the running for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
