Ethel Barrymore Theatre Rules

Please be aware that absolutely no recording devices of any kind, including still cameras, will be allowed into the theatre. This is at the request of the majority of performers and shows, who do not allow any duplication of their performances.

As is common practice in most theaters, children under the age of five years old will not be permitted, and the show may not be suitable for children under the age of 12. All children that do attend must be seated with an adult.

Outside food and drink are not permitted in the theater, however soft drinks, water, cocktails and candy are all available to buy.

The Ethel Barrymore Theater lobby will typically open 45 mins prior to curtain, and it is recommended that guests arrive at least 15 minutes before the performance is due to start.

There is no dress code at Ethel Barrymore Theatre, as the type of performances offered varies greatly. Anything from formal wear to smart casual would be appropriate, depending on the performance.

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all guests, the Ethel Barrymore Theatre has established the following guidelines:

Recording devices

Recording devices of any kind, including still cameras, are strictly prohibited inside the theater. 

Children’s attendance

» Children under the age of 5 are not permitted to attend performances.

» Many shows may not be suitable for children under the age of 12. Always check with the box office before booking tickets. 

» All children must be accompanied by an adult and seated together.

Food and drink

» Outside food and beverages are not allowed in the theater. 

» Soft drinks, water, cocktails, and candy are available for purchase at the venue. Service starts 30 minutes before the performance begins.

Arrival and lobby access

» The theater lobby opens 45 minutes before the scheduled curtain time.

» It is recommended that guests arrive at least 15 minutes before the performance begins. This gives you plenty of time to find your seats, stock up on snacks, and prepare for the performance. 

Dress code

The Ethel Barrymore Theatre does not enforce a formal dress code. Guests are encouraged to dress according to the occasion, with attire ranging from formal wear to smart casual being appropriate based on the performance. Looking for an excuse to dress up? It’s Broadway, so there’s no such thing as overdressed! 

Prohibited items 

There are several prohibited items that you cannot take into the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. They’re banned to protect the safety of all guests. Here are some of the prohibited items:

» Alcohol

» Drugs or illegal substances

» Large bags, backpacks, and duffel bags

» Professional camera equipment

» Laptops

» Laser pointers

» Pets (except service dogs)

» Weapons, including guns, knives, mace, and pepper spray
